BIA's are becoming a community standard in British Columbia and Quesnel has three active business improvement associations — Downtown; West Quesnel and South Quesnel. A BIA helps to create stronger communities by supporting local businesses, developing local events and marketing, and by reflecting the needs of each distinctive area. They are a way for each community to be responsive to their own unique needs.
Each BIA is funded by an annual assessment that is included in your annual tax notice for your business property. Each BIA will have a different assessment unique to that business community and that has been voted on by each association members. The 2010 assessments for each of the associations are: Downtown Quesnel Business Association $1.32 per thousand; South Quesnel Business Association $1.41 per thousand and the West Quesnel Business Association $2.33 per thousand.
Because the assessments are included on the annual tax for each business property, if you own a business within any of the boundaries for the different associations you are automatically a member of that association. If you rent a commercial or industrial property within any of the boundaries for the different associations you are considered to be a member of that association through your operation at the premises. The West Quesnel Business Association also has a bylaw in which businesses that operate outside of their boundaries can pay a membership fee to join the association.
